The zoo said in a statement that the cleaning worker was in a restricted access area where his company does not perform tasks.

He apparently tried to feed or touch Eko, a four-year-old Malaysian tiger who arrived at the Naples Zoo in 2020, through the gate, and the cat grabbed his arm and pulled him into the enclosure.

When the police arrived, they tried to get the tiger to release the worker’s arm, but they were unsuccessful and had to shoot the feline, according to the statement.

The animal withdrew to the rear of its enclosure and the zoo verified with a drone that it was unconscious and later that it had died.
