EU mandates with ÖBB-Nightjet from Vienna to Brussels

As scheduled at 8:38 p.m., the first ÖBB night train from Vienna to Brussels left Vienna Central Station on Sunday evening. In addition to numerous Austrian MEPs, ÖBB boss Andreas Matthä is also on board the Nightjet, which is expected after just over 14 hours on Monday morning in Brussels-North.

The new night train connection offers an environmentally friendly mobility service to the EU metropolis twice a week. According to the environmental protection organization Greenpeace, traveling by night train is far less harmful to the climate than a flight: while passengers on the route from Vienna to Brussels each produce 410 kg of CO2, it is only 40 kg of CO2 per person for Nightjet passengers.

In addition to MPs, lobbyists, other business travelers and tourists should travel to Brussels on the night train without changing trains, the Bundesbahn hopes. Depending on your wallet, you can choose between a night in a sleeper, couchette or seat. The cheapest Sparschiene ticket costs 59.90 euros, if you want to travel alone in the single deluxe compartment with shower, toilet and breakfast, you have to put down 249 euros.

Three years ago, ÖBB partially took over Deutsche Bahn’s night train business and are continuing to expand their network. In addition to the existing destinations such as Berlin, Hamburg, Zurich, Rome, Venice and now Brussels, connections to Scandinavia or Spain are also being considered.
