A connected bra to screen for breast cancer

The most frequent cancer in women in France continues to claim victims despite a generalized screening program launched in 2004 throughout the country. Currently, its screening necessarily requires a mammogram, but a preventive technology devised by students from the Federal Polytechnic of Lausanne could soon be marketed.

The SmartBra

Developed by a group of students as part of their curriculum, this smart bra called “SmartBra” will aim “ prevent and detect cancers at their earliest stage, via a frequent, non-invasive and painless monitoring method “Said Hugo Vuillet, a student of the team, in an EPFL press release.

The idea? Instead of using X-rays favored by mammography, the bra uses an ultrasound system generated by piezoelectric sensors. Its plastic interface containing the ultrasonic transmitters replaces the gel usually used during ultrasounds. And now, voila !

Marketing by 2021

First intended for women already diagnosed, it will then be offered to women considered to be “at risk” because of their genetic heritage, ” in prevention of the development of cancerous masses thanks to the controlled distribution of low doses of ultrasound to restore apoptosis ” Ultimately, the goal is to make the bra accessible to all women and to warn them if an abnormal mass is detected.

Available from next year, these 2.0 bras will be, we hope, the precursors of a new technology accompanying underwear. And if this made it possible to detect different types of cancer early, we would see real progress in the fight against this widespread disease. Encouraging!
