A Christchurch terrorist could be transferred to a prison in Australia – Abroad – News

Taranto, whose verdict was read on Thursday, is not entitled to early release.

Tarants opened fire on two mosques in Christchurch on March 15 last year, killing 51 people. He filmed his attack and streamed it live on Facebook.

It was the largest mass shooting in New Zealand’s recent history.

The sentence imposed on 29-year-old Taranto is the harshest sentence handed down in New Zealand.

New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peter on Friday called on Australia to readmit Taranto, a citizen, to save New Zealand the cost of his life sentence.

Peter said Taranta’s imprisonment, including enhanced security measures, would cost New Zealand 4,000 New Zealand dollars (2,247 euros) a day. Peter said that by the time Tarant died in prison, the cost of his imprisonment could reach 50 million New Zealand dollars (28 million euros).

“This terrorist should be returned to the country that raised him,” Peter told Australian television.

“The Islamic community and the whole of New Zealand have already suffered enough to pay the cost of astronomical imprisonment to keep them safe in our prison system,” Peter said.

The Australian prime minister, on Channel 7’s Sunrise program, welcomed Tarant’s death behind bars and said he was ready to discuss the issue of his detention with New Zealand’s prime minister, Jindind Ardern.

Morrison said he had not received a formal request from the New Zealand government to transfer Taranta to a prison in Australia.
