man entrenched in apartment causes fire in Manhattan – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – A fire at an apartment in Manhattan injured seven people, including two police officers, after authorities said a man locked himself in the scene and set fire on Saturday afternoon.

According to the New York City Police, the uniformed officers arrived at the 6-story building, located at 2201 Fifth Avenue in East Harlem, due to a violation of a domestic violence protection order. They arrived at the scene around 5:30 pm, and the suspect would have locked himself in the apartment on the second floor and started the fire.

Authorities managed to enter the scene and transferred the suspect to Saint Lukes Roosevelt Hospital for smoke inhalation. The identity of the suspect and the charges are still pending.

The injured, a total of 7 including two police officers, were transported to Saint Lukes Roosevelt Hospital and Harlem Hospital. It is unknown if the suspect is included among these 7 injured.

Firefighters investigate the cause of the fire.
