1. Cold disease
Older people have a weaker ability to cope with the cold than adults in general. The ability to maintain body temperature is also affected by aging. As we age, the autonomic nervous system function or blood vessel defense mechanism deteriorates, and blood vessels narrow in cold weather. This reduces heat loss and lowers compensatory responses such as shaking the body and raising body temperature. This is why the elderly are vulnerable to cold diseases.

Cold disease refers to a condition in which the core body temperature drops below 35 degrees. These include hypothermia and frostbite and the main symptoms include fatigue, body tremors, confusion and drowsiness. Cold disease is a condition that can lead to death due to amputation of the body or impaired function of vital organs. Therefore, if you have a cold, you should immediately seek medical attention after taking emergency measures.

2. Accidents from falling
The elderly are at high risk of falls due to weak muscle strength and poor joint flexibility. In particular, in winter, the risk of falling accidents is high as roads become slippery, such as icy roads and snow-soaked marbles, so caution is needed. One reason to watch out for falls in winter is that when the temperature is low, muscles contract, stiffen and joints become less flexible, which increases the risk of muscle and joint damage compared to other seasons.

Mild symptoms after a fall will naturally improve over time, but serious complications can occur in the event of a wrist fracture or head injury that require prompt treatment. Especially if you have a hip fracture, you should go to the hospital without delay. This is because a hip fracture is a dangerous condition with a 70% risk of death within two years if not treated properly. The reason hip fractures are so lethal is that when a hip fracture occurs, you have to lie down for a long time, which reduces metabolic function and increases the risk of complications such as pressure sores, stroke, and pneumonia.

3. Cardiovascular diseases
Elderly people suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure should pay more attention to health care in winter. This is because sudden exposure to cold air constricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure, which increases the risk of worsening underlying diseases or causing complications.

In particular, myocardial infarction and stroke occur frequently, and these two diseases are fatal diseases that can lead to death if the optimal time (golden period) for adequate treatment is missed. In general, the golden time for myocardial infarction is within 2 hours, and the golden time for stroke is within 3 hours.
