Reports of Women Almost Rape in Aceh Rejected by Police Because of Not Having Vaccines

Banda Aceh

The Banda Aceh Legal Aid Institute (LBH) revealed that there were victims attempted rape rejected by the police. The reason for the refusal was said to be because the victim had not been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Head of Operations YLBHI-LBH Banda Aceh Muhammad Qodrat, said the case of attempted rape was experienced by a 19-year-old student in a village in Aceh Besar. At the time of the incident, the victim was said to be alone in the boarding house.

“It happened last Sunday around 4 pm. The door of the victim’s house was suddenly knocked on by a man and when he opened it, the man immediately covered the victim’s mouth and allegedly wanted to rape the victim,” said Qodrat at a press conference at the LBH Banda Aceh office, Tuesday. (19/10/2021).

He said the victim fought back and soon the victim’s mother returned home. The perpetrator is said to have fled immediately.

After the incident, the victim and village officials complained to the LBH Banda Aceh. LBH then accompanied the victim to make a report to the Banda Aceh Police, Monday (18/10).

According to Qodrat, when he arrived at the main gate, the officer asked for vaccine certificate as a condition for admission to the Police. The victim is said to have no certificate because he cannot be vaccinated.

“The victim has a certificate that she cannot be vaccinated but lives in her village. At that time, coincidentally, there were two people from LBH who had vaccine certificates, so they were allowed to enter,” explained Qodrat.

When he was in the SPKT room, said Qodrat, he was asked for a vaccine certificate again. The police are said to have asked for a vaccine certificate to make a report.

“SPKT did not receive the report because there was no vaccine certificate. The police insisted that the report must have a vaccine certificate,” said Qodrat.

His party then took the initiative to make a report to Aceh Police. There it is said that a vaccine certificate is not required to make a report. But their report is also called not processed.

“Officers also refused to issue a report letter on the grounds that the victim did not know the perpetrator or his characteristics clearly,” he explained.

LBH Banda Aceh regretted the attitude of the police who refused the report because there was no vaccine certificate. He also assessed that the action of the Aceh Police for not issuing a letter of evidence was very wrong.

“The actions of the Polresta are very inappropriate, violating human rights. We hope that an incident like this will not repeat itself,” he said.
