Reshmi Samant, a native of Udupi, who was elected President of the Oxford University Students’ Union by a large majority a few days ago, has resigned following controversy.
The resignation follows allegations that some of Reshmi’s old posts on social media contained racism and intolerance. Reshmi (22) was the first Indian president in the history of Oxford University.
Reshmi’s separate reference to women and transgender women during the campaign led to protests. Apart from this, the caption given to the picture of the place where the genocide took place during the German visit was also controversial.
Chinese students were outraged when the film was captioned Ching Chang during a visit to Malaysia. Westerners call it Ching Chang to make fun of the Chinese.
Reshmi apologized for the remarks but decided to resign as opposition grew.
