Automotive. The new Opel Mokka immediately arrives in electric

On the Mokka, you have the choice: petrol, diesel or 100% electric. The “watt” version is obviously expensive: € 11,450 more than a petrol version with an automatic transmission of comparable power (130 hp). Huge additional cost, of course. But comparable to what is done with the competition. The 136 hp of the electric motor are quite lively, and always pleasant on a daily basis.

Always attractive driving

This maximum power is offered in “Sport” mode. But, as on the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008 with which this Mokka shares its chassis and all its electrical part, you can modulate it, to reduce your consumption and increase your range: in “Normal” mode, you will have 109 hp, and in “Eco” mode of only 82 hp. But in any case, if you crush the throttle for a vigorous pickup, you’ll get full power, with no delay in response. Right, in “Sport” mode, the accelerator is too sensitive: it becomes difficult to adjust. You can also adjust the “engine brake” level when you take your foot off the accelerator.

Average autonomy, nothing more

For recharging, count 28 hours on a conventional outlet, half less on a reinforced outlet. And 7 hours with a 7.4 kW wallbox. On high-power stations, you will recharge to 80% in 30 minutes. © JR Macchia

According to our electricity consumption, the range can reach, on the road, nearly 280 km, adopting a very calm driving. A correct number, nothing more. The car is efficient and balanced in handling, and its controls give off crisp, really attractive sensations. Particular attention has been paid to acoustic comfort: air noise and rolling noise are well contained.

A good surprise, especially on such a compact model: the flexible bench is really comfortable and pleasantly accommodates a passenger in its center. The chassis having been automatically designed to accommodate an electric version, the batteries are perfectly integrated into the floor (under the seats) and do not bite on the interior livability. On the other hand, the trunk volume drops from 350 to 310 liters, which is a bit small.

Original presentation but screens too small

Far from any banality, the dashboard reflects a real personality and seduces with its fluid and modern appearance. Unfortunately, only the top-of-the-range version has the right to the large central 10 “screen, which is already not huge. The others are content with a 7” panel, which appears very small. And in any case, access to the controls remains a bit complicated. Good point: Opel has kept the air conditioning and heating settings in direct access. Much more practical than navigating through menus …

We liked

Very good driving pleasure, small footprint, particularly careful silence, very comfortable bench seat, modern and attractive interior presentation.

We appreciated less

Central screen too small, limited trunk, 11 kW charger option expensive for the moment (900 € + cable at 300 €), accelerator too sensitive in sport mode, rear windows only partially lowering.
