Mother in Singapore Gives Birth to Baby with Covid-19 Antibody

SINGAPORE, KOMPAS.com – A woman by nationality Singapore give birth baby which have antibodies against corona virus. The mother was infected Covid-19 in March when pregnant.

Reuters quotes the newspaper Straits Times, Sunday (29/11/2020), reported that the baby was born this month without being exposed to Covid-19, but instead had antibodies to the virus.

“My doctor suspected I had transferred Covid-19 antibodies I told her during my pregnancy, “Celine Ng-Chan told the newspaper.

Quoted Kompas.com from VOA Indonesia, Ng-Chan developed mild symptoms due to the coronavirus and was discharged from the hospital after two and a half weeks.

Ng-Chan and the National University Hospital (NUH), where he was born, did not immediately comment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is not yet known whether a pregnant woman with Covid-19 can transmit the virus to her fetus or baby during pregnancy or childbirth.

Until now, the active virus has not been found in fluid samples around the baby in the womb or in breast milk.

Doctors in China reported decreases in Covid-19 antibodies over time in babies born to women who contracted the coronavirus, according to an article published in October in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Doctors from New York-Presbyterian / Columbia University Irving Medical Center reported in October in JAMA Pediatrics that mother-to-newborn transmission of the new coronavirus is rare.
