802.11ay WiFi at 60 GHz … for Apple Glass glasses?

A few days ago, the blog Macotakara suggested compatibility 802.11ay WiFi for the iPhone 12 expected in September. This variant of WiFi provides very high speed at short range via the 60 GHz band.

The technology is not completely finalized, this rumor was greeted with a certain skepticism, even if the SoC Snapdragon 855 and 865 from Qualcomm already offer this functionality on the Android side.

It corresponds to an evolution of the Gigabit WiFi, or WiGig, which is also the basis of Terragraph project of Facebook formalized in 2018. But if it offers very high speeds (several Gbps to several tens of Gbps), its short range and its low diffusion hardly allow it to cross obstacles.

What could it be used on an iPhone? A first assumption relates to a possible increase in transfer speeds for AirDrop but another idea is raised by MacWorld: and if the 802.11ay WiFi of the iPhone 12 prepared the arrival of Apple Glass, these glasses or this helmet of augmented reality which could be formalized this year or next year?

The technology offers in any case the ingredients (high speed, low latency) to meet the needs of an AR or VR headset whose processing power would be provided by the iPhone and which would not need to be connected by a cable .

This is probably an idea to explore, but it is above all the meeting of two rumors which will already have to be confirmed!
