5 Warning Signs to Watch for in Your Relationship: Tips from Financial Experts

Wiesbaden/Berlin – “Love is sometimes blind in the beginning” – qualified psychologist and financial coach Monika Müller is convinced of this. It’s no surprise that people tend to let their partner get away with it in the early stages of a relationship.

When it comes to finances in particular, there are some warning signs that should make men and women suspicious. The experts at the financial startup Forget Finance explain when couples should start talking about this topic – before the problem grows.

1. Taboo topic of money

Talking openly about money issues in a relationship is important, says Monika Müller. This creates deeper trust and thus a healthy basis. This also makes it possible to find out whether the partners’ financial ideas are compatible with one another. However, if a man or woman deliberately avoids the topic, this can be a sign to probe carefully. Forget Finance says it’s important to keep an open mind because people don’t want to talk about money for a variety of reasons.

2. Lack of visibility into expenses

The alarm bells should also ring if one of the partners spends money uncontrollably and loses track of expenses. This could lead to bills not being paid on time and debts accumulating. Anyone who wants to build a shared future will have a harder time saving for emergencies and common goals.

3. Unfair sharing of expenses

Go to the cinema or eat together? Inviting each other is an appreciative gesture. However, if the impression arises that this is happening in a very one-sided way, frustration quickly arises. That’s why it should be clear to both of you what each other’s financial possibilities are. In this way, expenses can be shared more fairly.

4. Dependence on third parties

Does the working partner still receive financial support from their parents or someone else? This can, for example, indicate that the person cannot handle money sensibly or has settled into a financial hammock. However, if the partner is committed to changing this, the situation is not too problematic.

5. Financial secrets

Secret accounts? Overpriced purchases without agreement? Anyone who behaves like this towards their partner creates a certain level of mistrust. Suspicious cases like these should therefore be discussed at an early stage.
