5 Famous Ancient Cities That Have Disappeared, Number 3 is the Most Pathetic

1. Persepolis


Located in southwest Iran, the ancient city of Persepolis was founded in 518 BC by Darius the Great who is known as one of the most important rulers of the Achaemenid Dynasty. A majestic masterpiece in the middle of the desert, this huge Persian empire was elaborately constructed using slender columns supporting high ceilings.

There is a large bull statue that is considered a symbol of the god carved on the beam. But perhaps his most enduring achievement was his underground irrigation system called qanat. The structures range in size from one to 150 rooms, and accommodate this group of farmers. Mesa Verde is thought to have flourished between AD 550 and 1281. The residences and fine architecture of this stone house are still considered impressive today.

In the 14th century the Anasazi left the Mesa Verde area, but the reason for their sudden departure is never clear. There are theories that suggest that their departure was due to a failed harvest. Another theory states that their departure was due to attacks from other tribes.
