22 Indian Combat Police Killed Killed by Maoist Rebels in Chhattisgarh State

RAIPUR, KOMPAS.TV At least 22 members of India’s elite combat police force have been killed in a central Indian state by Maoist fighters, in one of the bloodiest attacks by an extreme leftist rebel group this year.

Security personnel belonging to the elite CoBRA Police unit and Indian Police Combat Special Task Force unit were attacked on Saturday (3/4/2021) in Chhattisgarh state during an anti-insurgency operation.

“We can confirm that 22 members of the Indian army have been killed by Maoist fighters,” a senior government official in Raipur, the mineral -rich capital of Chhattisgarh, said Sunday (4/4/2021).

They died in a gun battle that lasted four hours in the border district of Sukma, 540 km south of Raipur.

Om Prakash Pal, a senior police official in Raipur, said a sweeping operation to track down a missing member of the security forces was underway.

This time, the death toll from India’s security apparatus is the largest for India while battling left-wing insurgents since 2017.
