“1917” and “Once Upon a Time… in …

The feature film “1917”, a historic drama devoted to the First World War, received the award for best dramatic film at the 77th Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday evening. Its director Sam Mendes was also awarded.

“It’s a big surprise,” said the Briton (“American Beauty”, the James Bond “Skyfall”) when he received his award for best director. He was not considered a favorite against big names like Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”) and Quentin Tarantino (“Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”).

It’s a big surprise.

But the latter did not leave empty handed: Quentin Tarantino won the prize for best screenplay and his film “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” won that for best comedy.

Best interpretations

The Golden Globe for Best Dramatic Actress went to Renée Zellweger for her role as Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy”. It was the first time the actress had been in the running for the Golden Globes since “Bridget Jones’ Diary” in 2002, which revealed her to the public without rewarding her.

In the men’s category, it was Joaquin Phoenix who won the award for his interpretation of the Jocker in the eponymous film. Rewarded for the second time in the Golden Globes, he was preferred to the one who appeared as a favorite, the actor Adam Driver for his role as father in full divorce in “Marriage Story”.

Egerton and Awkwafina awarded comedy side

On the comedy side, Taron Egerton was dubbed best actor for his role as Elton John in the biopic “Rocketman” dedicated to the British singer. Taron Egerton is ahead of veterans in this category such as Daniel Craig (“Knives pulled”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood”) and Eddie Murphy (“Dolemite Is My Name”), given as favorite by some experts for his big return to the screen.

Among the ladies, the American Awkwafina won the award for her role as Billi in the film “L’Adieu”. Known for her very New York banter, the 31-year-old actress delivers, in this film on a Chinese family united by a drama, a nuanced and restrained interpretation.

Secondary roles and series

American actress Laura Dern received the Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of an aggressive lawyer in the film “Marriage Story” by Noah Baumbach. The 52-year-old actress gave the award to Jennifer Lopez, who was the other favorite for her role as a stripper in the movie “Queens”. This is the fifth Golden Globe for this child of the ball, daughter of actor Bruce Dern, who has frequented the sets from an early age.

On the men’s side, American Brad Pitt received the award for his role as stuntman Cliff Booth in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood”. Widely a favorite, the 56-year-old comedian won, notably over Tom Hanks (“An extraordinary friend”) and Al Pacino (“The Irishman”).

The feature film “Parasite” won an award in the “best foreign language film” category.

It’s an Amazon production, the crazy “Fleabag” series, that won the Golden Globe for best comedy series. Its creator, Briton Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was also awarded for her interpretation of the title role. The title of “best drama series” was won by “Succession” (HBO). As for “Chernobyl”, he won the prize for best mini-series.

Uncertain barometer

The award ceremony was presented by the very caustic British humorist Ricky Gervais. Racism, sexual harassment, competence of the jury, Ricky Gervais actually fired all fire, taking pleasure in pinning the floor of celebrities gathered at the Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills.

The coveted Golden Globes open the movie award season in Hollywood and also serve as a predictor for the Oscars. But this is a barometer all the more uncertain since they split the main categories (best film, best actor or actress) into “drama” and “comedy”.

The predictions are delicate because unlike the Oscars or other competitions, it is not the cinema professionals who vote but the hundreds of members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Last year, however, the jury had a hollow nose: all the Golden Globe award winners in the cinema category won an Oscar, with the exception of that of film music.
