It was the 10th edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen for women and of the 9 previous editions, 8 ended in a Dutch party.
Floortje Mackaij seemed to be the most promising northern neighbor this year. She went on the road in the final with the Australian Brodie Chapman, who had also been in a previous flight.
The succession of Flemish climbs and cobblestone sections invited a spectacle, but it failed to materialize. In the end, defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten chose to play the card of her fast teammate Sierra.
In the bunch sprint it was ultimately the 22-year-old Chiara Consonni who emerged from the suit in a mighty way. The sister of Cofidis rider Simone patted herself exuberantly on the chest after the most beautiful victory of her career.
Behind Consonni, Julie De Wilde parked in 2nd place. The 19-year-old talent of Plantur-Pura proves that there is even more life in Belgian women’s cycling than just Lotte Kopecky. With Shari Bossuyt (8th) even a second Belgian finished in the top 10.
