1,559,000 people moved from abroad in 2019

BerlinIn 2019, around 327,000 more people moved to Germany than moved away from Germany. In 2018 there were around 400,000 more migrants than migrants. As the Federal Statistical Office announced on Monday, net immigration fell for the fourth year in a row.

In total, around 1,559,000 people moved abroad in 2019 and 1,232,000 moved abroad, according to the Federal Office. This would include “both foreign and German citizens who leave the country or move to Germany (again)”. The decrease in net immigration to Germany compared to 2018 is primarily due to “the reduced immigration and increased emigration of foreign people”.

In 2019, 1,346,000 foreigners immigrated to Germany (2018: 1,384,000). In contrast, 961,000 migrants from non-German nationals were registered (2018: 924,000).

Despite a decrease in the net immigration of EU citizens, European nationals continued to contribute the most to the net immigration of non-German people with a positive balance of 214,000 people, announced the Federal Office further. Afterwards, nationals came from Asia (116,000) and from Africa (31,000). Among the Asian countries, the balance was highest for Syrian (31,000) and Indian (22,000) nationals.
