Fifteen people were injured in a shooting outside a funeral home in Chicago’s southern section where a police patrol was present, police reported

Unidentified people shot from a moving vehicle against mourners at the funeral home in the Gresham neighborhood, deputy police chief Eric Carter reported.

He added that several of those present responded to the fire. The vehicle crashed and its occupants fled in disparate directions. All the victims of the shooting are adults, he said.

A person was being questioned Tuesday night but there have been no arrests, said police spokesman Héctor Alfaro.

The incident occurs at a time when the Department of Homeland Security is considering dispatching federal agents to Chicago to combat an increase in violent crime in the city.

Most of the victims were taken by fire department vehicles to nearby hospitals in serious condition, said fire spokesman Larry Langford. Between they are 10 between 21 and 65 years old, one of whom was shot in the chest, police said. The 65-year-old woman was treated at the scene.

Among the other victims are a man who was shot in the chest and arm and two men, 32 and 22 years old, who were hit in the hands, police said.

Added that the event occurred near the funeral of a man who was shot to death last week in the Englewood neighborhood.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lamented Tuesday night that “too many people” have been to funerals due to a “senseless tragedy.” She called anyone with information to immediately contact the police, even anonymously.

A couple of neighbors, Arnita Geder and Kenneth Hughes, reported that they were at home and ran when they heard the shots.

“The street seemed like a battlefield”Geder told the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper.
