45117 E. urban areas / 45468 MH urban areas: The well-known grandchildren’s trick has made the leap into the digital age – fraudsters have recently started using the WhatsApp messenger service for their criminal activities. Even if no cases of the new fraud scheme have become known in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Essen, we would like to warn you now.
“Hello grandma, my cell phone broke. This is my new number, you can save it.” – The contact that the unknown con artists establish with their victims begins like this or similar. Most of the time, these messages are peppered with emoticons to make the message look more personal. A short time later, the fraudsters fake an emergency situation and ask for money.
For example, an open invoice of several thousand euros has to be paid. However, due to the defective cell phone, the supposed grandson has no way of accessing online banking to make a transfer. Therefore, the request goes to the alleged grandma to make this transfer to a named account. The money would supposedly be paid back in a few days, but it doesn’t.
Die Polizei rät deshalb:
- Kontaktieren Sie Ihre Familienmitglieder über die Ihnen
bekannten Telefonnummern, um den Betrug zu verhindern oder
aufzuklären!
- Gehen Sie keinesfalls auf die Geldforderungen ein!
- Wenn Überweisungen bereits veranlasst wurden, kontaktieren Sie
Ihr Geldinstitut, um die Zahlungen im besten Fall rückgängig zu
machen!
- Sichern Sie den Chatverlauf für die Polizei!
- Rufen Sie die Polizei unter der 110 an und erstatten Sie
Strafanzeige!
