Since 2018, the number of German-language audio formats on the Spotify streaming platform has increased within a year more than 12,000 offers versechsfacht. “The popularity of podcasts is just one more testament to people’s need for information and entertainment,” observed Gregor Waller, media psychologist at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences, in the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”.
Highest access numbers: content on the corona pandemic
Corona has driven the Germans’ need for information via listening formats. The weekly podcast “The Coronavirus Update”, produced by NDR Info, which according to the broadcaster has so far been viewed more than 75 million times, has certainly contributed to this. The channels MDR and WDR also offer audible information about the virus. According to a representative survey by the digital industry association Bitkom, German podcast fans currently prefer to hear content about the corona pandemic (83 percent), followed by general news (53 percent), comedy (44 percent) and sports (43 percent). Medicine and health came in fifth with 39 percent. Waller also ascribes a certain increase in the popularity of audio formats “Screen fatigue” too, which is particularly common in people who sit in front of the computer during the day and in front of the television in the evening. “Podcasts are a good alternative,” said Waller.
