With around seven million francs, the Zurich municipal council announced a good half of the ZKB anniversary dividend for people affected by poverty on Wednesday. The other half goes to climate and children and youth projects.

Originally, the city council wanted to use the seven million to alleviate the consequences of the Corona crisis. A majority of the local council voted on Wednesday to generally support projects that benefit people affected by poverty.

The other half of the anniversary dividend – around CHF 6.6 million – will be used to support projects in the areas of climate and environment as well as children and youth between 2021 and 2024. Most of the amount, 5.4 million francs, will be used for the “For Zurich” project competition.

Projects can apply for contributions between CHF 10,000 and CHF 250,000, as stated in the city council directive.

The stipulation is that the projects sustainably increase the quality of life in Zurich, do not pursue any commercial goals and do not require any further city funds. To do this, it must be possible to implement them within two years.

In addition to the project competition, projects with smaller financing requirements – CHF 1,000 to CHF 9999 – are supported with CHF 600,000. This should be voted on online.

A further CHF 600,000 will be used to start-up funding for the youth initiative. The youth initiative is expected to be launched at the end of the year with the new Stadtzürcher municipal code.

It is a gathering of at least sixty children and young people between the ages of 12 and 18 who can easily submit an inspection order (postulate) for a measure to the municipal council.

On its 150th anniversary, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) distributed an anniversary dividend of CHF 150 million in addition to the ordinary dividend for the canton and municipalities. The city of Zurich received its share of 13.6 million last June.
