A source told CNN on Saturday (12/17/2022), CNN reported that Ukraine’s presidential office has offered Zelensky to appear on video in front of soccer fans at a Qatari stadium ahead of the final match between Argentina and France on Sunday (18 /12) local time.
The office of the Ukrainian president would have said they were surprised by the negative response given by FIFA. It is unclear whether Zelensky’s video message will be delivered in person or if it was recorded in advance.
“We think FIFA wants to use its platform for the greater good,” the source quoted by CNN as saying.
However, talks between Ukraine and FIFA are still ongoing, according to the source. CNN reached out to FIFA seeking comment, but received no response.
Zelensky’s request, while quite unusual, is not surprising. Ukraine has repeatedly used major world events, regardless of theme, to keep the global spotlight on Ukraine’s ongoing war.
