Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may have caught a cold during his visit to Great Britain. The most attentive observers of his progress had noticed a somewhat amusing situation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who arrived in Brussels on Thursday to demand more weapons to repel Russian aggression, received a warm welcome from the leaders of the European Union (EU) member states and a stormy ovation in the European Parliament (EP).
Addressing the participants of the EU summit, he called for stricter sanctions against Moscow and punishment of the Russian leaders responsible for the invasion of Ukraine. “A free Europe is unthinkable without a free Ukraine,” Zelensky emphasized. “Europe is free, Europe will be free and Europe is united.”
Entering his second foreign visit since the start of Russia’s repeated invasion on February 24 of last year, the Ukrainian president met with British Prime Minister Rizhi Sunak in London on Wednesday, and then had dinner in Paris with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The main topic of these talks was Kiev’s demands to supply Ukraine with modern fighter jets, but so far Zelenskiy has only received Sunak’s promise to train Ukrainian pilots to fly these planes.
However, addressing MEPs, some dressed in Ukrainian national colours, Zelenskiy skipped the usual demands for more weapons, instead focusing more on the contribution of rank-and-file Europeans in taking in Ukrainian refugees.
“I would like to thank you, all of you who are helping our nation, our citizens, our displaced people here, [pateikties] to those who call on their leaders to increase and increase their support,” the Ukrainian leader said in his speech.
President of the European Council Jozeps Borel told journalists before the EU summit that the leaders of the member states are ready to commit to providing even more military aid to Ukraine, but did not provide further explanations.
Western countries have so far refrained from supplying Ukraine with warplanes and other weapons that could be used to strike targets deep in Russian territory. However, the atmosphere surrounding Zelensky’s visit could indicate that this taboo could finally fall.
“You have to win, and now [ES] Member States must quickly decide on the next step by providing the long-range systems and fighter jets you need to protect your freedom,” emphasized EP President Roberta Metsol, announcing Zelensky’s speech.
