YouTube and TikTok Rumored to Enter the e-Commerce Business in Indonesia: Minister of Communication and Information’s Response

Two giant social media platforms, YouTube and TikTokis rumored to be spreading its wings by entering business e-Commerce in Indonesia. Regarding this matter, the Minister of Communication and Information (Minister of Communication and Information) Budi Arie Setiadi open your voice.

As is known, YouTube is known as a video platform. Meanwhile, TikTok is a social media player that previously had a TikTok Shop but was shut down by the government.

Specifically for TikTok Shop, it is reported that they want to ‘live’ again by registering as an e-Commerce, like Tokopedia, Lazada, and Shopee.

“As Indonesia, we open opportunities for anyone to try as long as they follow the rules and regulations that apply to us,” said Minister of Communication and Information Budi in Jakarta, Thursday (2/11/2023).

“That TikTok Shop does e-Commerce business in Indonesia, yes, we welcome it, as long as there is a separation of the platforms. If it is social media, then social media, if it is e-Commerce, then e-Commerce, or the entity or whatever still has to be in accordance with our rules,” he said.

Likewise, the issue of YouTube wanting to become an e-Commerce player in Indonesia, the Minister of Communication and Information invited YouTube. However, like TikTok Shop, YouTube is also required to follow applicable regulations.

“We have to open this business climate to all parties who want to run a business in Indonesia. We have to open ourselves up, but earlier regarding YouTube, Meta, TikTok Shop, all kinds of important entities have to be separated. If it’s social media, it’s social media. media, e-commerce, yes e-commerce,” he explained.

In a report, TikTok and YouTube will register the license as e-Commerce. As quoted by Reuters, specifically for Tiktok, it is discussing collaborating with local e-Commerce players including Tokopedia, while waiting for the development of a separate Tiktok Shop application.
