Youth international Van Drongelen long on the side with torn cruciate ligament | NOW

Rick van Drongelen suffered a serious injury in the home match of Hamburger SV against SV Sandhausen on Sunday. The Dutch youth international tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is expected to be on the sidelines for six months.

Van Drongelen ended up unhappy after a duel and remained on the ground moaning in pain. After treatment, the 21-year-old defender supported by caregivers was able to leave the field.

The severity of the injury quickly became apparent upon investigation. The former player of Sparta Rotterdam expects to be operated on in the short term.

“Probably here in Hamburg, because there is a good specialist here,” he tells it AD. “He also operated on two teammates of mine. After that operation, I will work on my recovery with a tunnel vision. Work hard to be back as soon as possible.”

HSV also in Second Bundesliga next year

Van Drongelen had a dramatic afternoon anyway. Partly due to the defender’s own goal, HSV lost 1-5 to SV Sandhausen, missing out on the playoffs for promotion / relegation. The German club therefore also plays in the Second Bundesliga next season.

Van Drongelen’s serious injury also means bad news for the Dutch Juniors. The Netherlands will play against Belarus and Norway in September in the qualifying series for the Euro 21 of 2021.

The selection of national coach Erwin van de Looi is on course to conquer a European Championship ticket for the first time since 2013.
