Youngest brother in Lotte case appeals against sentence | Inland

The brothers, who are now 18 and 16 years old, were sentenced to two and one year in prison plus youth detention on December 23, because they are jointly guilty of the death of the 14-year-old girl. The court applied juvenile law for both brothers as they were still minors (17 and 15 years old) at the time of the crime.

The crime took place in Almelo a year ago. After an anonymous phone call, which turned out to have come from the father of the boys, the police found Lotte’s body in a ditch near a business park on the edge of the city of Twente. She appeared to have been strangled.

Soon the two brothers and their father were arrested. The two had been in a relationship with Lotte independently of each other. The eldest had quarreled with her when she shared a nude photo of him with friends. She had also told him that she had become pregnant with him, which turned out not to be true.

The brothers had agreed with her afterwards. An argument ensued, with heavy blows being thrown. In the end, the eldest brother would have killed Lotte. The youngest brother had collaborated with him on this, so according to the judges they were jointly responsible for the girl’s death. They were also heavily charged for pushing the body into a ditch and covering it with reeds and grass clippings.
