You had a date, who pays the bill? † Join the conversation

Uncomfortable

It can be very inconvenient to decide who should pay for the date. That is what two out of three Dutch people think. In addition, two thirds find ‘deciding on who pays’ worse than paying itself, according to research by Tikkie. Sending an unannounced payment request after the date is certainly not popular: according to more than eight in ten Dutch people, that is inappropriate.

Who pays?

Does the man have to pay? 82% of survey respondents believe that men and women should pick up the bill equally often. That depends on how often you have already agreed: on the first date, half of the men pay the bill, compared to 7% of the women. During the first date, the man often pays or the bill is divided. 85% of women would rather split the amount on the first date, while for men that percentage is 70%.

How do you determine who pays? Do you leave it to the men? After all, they have more to spend on average than women: in 2018, men in the business community received 19% more income than women, according to Statistics Netherlands. Or do you think that everything should be distributed fairly to combat inequality? Or do you pay the bill to show that you liked the other person?
