XV Years of Trans Women: Award-Winning Photojournalist Captures a Celebration of Equality

Through a statement, the National Council to Prevent Discrimination (CONAPRED) announced the winners of the XVIII Faces for Equality Award “Gilberto Rincón Gallardo”, among whom stands out the EFENoticias México photojournalist Sáshenka Gutiérrez, whose series of photographs titled ‘XV years of trans women’, was awarded recognition in one of the four categories imposed by the award.

Sáshenka’s work tells through portraits the story of a group of adult and elderly trans women, who after going through a lifetime of discrimination, finally achieved the dream of celebrating, with colorful dresses and dances, a traditional “XV years” party.

With the desire to live the experience of being celebrated in the traditional Mexican rite, 18 women, ages 55 to 72, gathered to simulate a series of dances that had the symbolic meaning of a transition from girl to woman attached.

In the photographs you can see how, amid applause and shouts, the protagonists of the celebration saw the illusion that they had carried for years and that the systematic oppression of the minority group to which they belonged had deprived them of experiencing.

Other projects awarded by CONAPRED were the journalistic text ‘Agrodisplaced: the cost of the dairy basin in La Laguna’, by Francisco Javier Rodríguez Lozano; the radio report ‘Catching in disability’, by Aleida Rueda Rodríguez and Carlos Antonio Sánchez Rodríguez; and the visual report ‘Sexdiverse indigenous people in Mexico, resistance and resilience’, by Nayeli Sharenii Guzmán Roque, Juan Antonio Ibarra Gómez, Roberto Gabriel Rodríguez Torres, Elizabeth Cruz Larios and Mauricio Torres Carrillo.

All of these works stood out among the 137 journalistic pieces received, coming from 20 states of the Mexican Republic and were distinguished for being the ones that best addressed issues related to the right to equality and non-discrimination.
