Gustavo Dudamel becomes music director of the Paris Opera

Paris / Berlin (MH) – The Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel is the new music director of the Paris Opera. The 40-year-old will take up the position on August 1, 2021, announced Artistic Director Alexander Neef on Friday. His contract runs for six seasons. Dudamel succeeds the Swiss Philippe Jordan, who moved to the Vienna State Opera in the same position in September 2020.

With the Venezuelan, the Paris Opera has won one of the most talented and prominent conductors in the world, explained Neef. “Through our lively exchange, I have seen that he is the ideal person to share his love for opera with a large number of people and to bring this art closer to them.” The appointment of Dudamel corresponds to the desire of the House for a greater opening. In addition, one wants to guarantee its charisma through operas, ballets and symphony concerts from classical to contemporary music.

Dudamel made his debut at the Paris Opera in 2017 with “La Bohème”. He wanted to use all his energy “to create extraordinary musical moments for our audience and to connect the Paris Opera ever more closely with the soul of the city and the country that surrounds it,” said the conductor. At the same time, he remains Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which he has directed since 2009.
