As a preamble to its CES 2020 conference, AMD presented new images of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, revealing its connectors.
Before starting its conference in Las Vegas for the CES, AMD came back to important partners who will use its products, like Sony with its PlayStation 5 and Microsoft with its Series X.
Modern rear, compatibility front
In particular, the brand presented a video, new images of the Xbox Series X, revealing for the first time the connectors of the machine.
The screenshots taken by us are not of excellent quality, but here is what we can discern from top to bottom:
- an RJ45 port
- an S / PDIF digital audio port
- two USB-C ports
- two HDMI ports
- the power connector
To this list you must still add the USB Type-A port which had already been seen on the front. In terms of USB ports, Microsoft is therefore both modern and modern, while ensuring that its controllers can easily be recharged with a conventional cable.
Note that this does not presage the use of a micro USB port, or that of a USB Type-C port, for the new Xbox controller. Even if the controller Xbox Elite Series 2 gives us a clue on this subject.
Two mysterious HDMI ports
The most intriguing is especially the presence of two HDMI ports. Xbox One fans know that since this generation, Microsoft consoles have integrated an HDMI output, but also an HDMI input.
This is the last relic of the time when Microsoft wanted to turn its console into a multimedia center: just plug in your TV box or other HDMI device to control it with the Xbox (and possibly Kinect).
With a Microsoft now fully geared towards video games, it is difficult to conclude if these two HDMI ports once again play the video input and output roles, or if for some unknown reason Microsoft has chosen to support two outputs videos. Such a strategy would control two screens, or a virtual reality headset for example.
The most likely assumption remains that of a legacy of the multimedia center system.
Integrated power supply
Last point regarding the connectivity, the power port uses the standard C7 connector on game consoles, which we find historically in PlayStation, and means that the Xbox Series X integrates its own power supply. If you’ve experienced the Xbox 360 or the first Xbox One, that means: forget about the much bulky power supply. A very good news.
