“We assure you, aliens have not landed in the Bronx”, a New York police inspector assured Twitter the night of Thursday, December 27. Why such a denial? Because the city that never sleeps was bathed in the night with an electric blue luminous halo, enough to stir up fears. “This is typically what you would have said if they had landed in Queens,” replies an amused Twitter user.

In fact, it was the explosion of a transformer that created this phenomenon. The incident took place at a power plant operated by the ConEdison power company in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, just across from Manhattan.
“They tried to erase everyone’s memory, like in Men in Black 2”
The incident did not cause any injuries and police said the situation was under control in New York. But not on Twitter. Internet users had a lot of fun seeing these blue lightning in the sky.
For some people, “They tried to erase everyone’s memory”, as in Men in Black 2, others see the announcement of a return of Godzilla

“The aliens are there, I know it’s true because they stopped in Astoria as soon as they landed”, tweeted with humor Joe Budden, a musician.
“The New York skies look exactly like the time Thanos descended on Earth”, tweeted another, Jeff Lowe, referring to the movie Infinity War from the Avengers saga.
“Something insane is happening in the Manhattan skyline”, tweeted Eric Klinenberg, sociologist at New York University.

In the end, New Yorkers had to accept a more prosaic reality.
“No extraterrestrials”, reacted Eric Phillips, spokesman for the mayor of New York, also on Twitter, simply “A transformer exploded in the ConEd plant in Queens”.
