WWDC 2021: Improvements for notifications and privacy

Tongues loosen a little bit on the cusp of WWDC’s inaugural keynote on Monday, but it’s not yet a tidal wave of indiscretions – after all, so much the better, it leaves room for a few surprises. ! After Joanna Stern from WSJ who predicted novelties for Safari, Health, Maps and iMessage, it’s Mark Gurman’s turn to Bloomberg to clarify some of the hallway noises already heard last April.

iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 should significantly improve notifications, not only their design when they appear at the top of the screen, but also how they work. The user will be able to report a specific status – he drives, he sleeps, he works, he does not want to be disturbed – which will have an impact on the behavior of the notifications and the way they appear … or not: in the situations mentioned, we generally want to avoid being distracted by an alert.

Logically, Apple would continue working on privacy and reducing data collection. A new settings panel would thus provide details on the nature of the data collected by third-party applications. One way to extend App Store privacy notices and App Tracking Transparency notification.

For the iPad specifically, the home screen will benefit from a big facelift with the possibility of pinning widgets. Multitasking should also benefit from a welcome improvement to be more intuitive to use. The iMessage application could position itself as a more direct competitor of Facebook messaging services (WhatsApp, Messenger). The iPhone and iPad lock screen revival is still in the works but not yet ready for iOS 15, according to Gurman.

Apple having made its effort last year with Big Sur, the novelties should be minor for macOS 12. watchOS would gain new health monitoring functions and interface improvements. Finally, tvOS will also be entitled to new features, but without further details (tvOS 14 had been rather poor).
