Wow! NASA Returns Detection of Large Asteroids Approaching Earth

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – According to NASA tracking data, a large asteroid measuring 450 feet or 137 meters crossed Earth’s orbit this Friday.

The asteroid, named 2021RE, is 3.4 million miles from Earth. For comparison, the distance between the Moon and Earth is 238,855 miles.

The asteroid is estimated to be traveling at a speed of 30 thousand mph (about 48,200 km per hour) and could make a dent if it hits Earth, quoted by the Daily Star, Friday (10/9/2021).

For information, every day the Earth is bombarded by more than 100 tons of small space rocks and debris between other planets the size of small pebbles.

For objects that are smaller than the average car, it may catch fire when it enters the atmosphere. This species is considered not to be a threat.

Meanwhile, NASA reports that every 2,000 years or so an asteroid the size of a football field will penetrate the atmosphere. If this happens it will cause significant damage.

Objects large enough to come every few million years could threaten civilization.

The Daily Star writes that over the next few days a number of objects of various sizes will pass near Earth. The object is the size of a house to a jet plane.

One of them is 2021 QH1 which passed near Earth today. Measuring 90 feet (27 meters) will be within 533 thousand miles.

Previously, NASA had also revealed new research about the possibility of the asteroid Bennu crashing into Earth. An asteroid measuring a third of a mile is predicted to hit Earth between now and 2300.

Type C rocks are listed as potentially hazardous objects. Bennu was first discovered in 1999 and is one of the two most dangerous asteroids in the solar system.

Even so, scientists say the probability of Benny crashing into Earth is 1:2,700 or about 0.037%.
