Wow, AstraZeneca Nipu Data on the Efficacy of the Covid Vaccine in the US?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Another vaccine AstraZeneca stricken with trouble. This time not from Europe but from the United States (US).

The US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said vaccine developers may have provided an incomplete view. Especially regarding the efficacy data (efficacy) of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in trials in that country.

“The Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) expressed concern that AstraZeneca may have included outdated information from the experiment, which may provide an incomplete view of the efficacy data,” the US agency said, referring to the DSMB quoted Tuesday (23/3 / 2021).

“We urge companies to work closely with DSMB to review effectiveness data and ensure the most accurate and up-to-date effectiveness data are published as quickly as possible.”

These comments came a day after AstraZeneca said the vaccine developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford was 79% effective in preventing coronavirus. These are the results of large trials in Chile, Peru and the US.

However, this figure is actually far below the efficacy of other vaccines, namely Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech. For the Moderna vaccine, the efficacy yielded more than 94% against Covid-19 while Pfizer-BioNTech was slightly greater at 95%.

AstraZeneca itself had a problem regarding the findings of blood clots experienced by several patients after being injected with the vaccine it made. Several European countries had decided to stop the inoculation program with the vaccine.

But before long, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) stated that there was no link between the vaccine and blood clotting. This has led several countries to finally continue inoculation with the vaccine.

Indonesia itself will use 11 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine obtained from the COVAX GAVI scheme made by the World Health Organization or WHO. So far, Indonesia has only received 1.1 million doses of the vaccine.
