Head Bernhard Bornhofen fears many new coronavirus cases after the end of the autumn vacation. After the vaccination center in the town hall has been closed, a new vaccination station will soon be set up in the Bernard building.

The helpers at the Offenbach vaccination center had to test themselves daily for ten months. At the closing party on Friday, after everything had been dismantled, the majority gave thanks to an extra test that was offered to them at the entrance to the town hall. After more than 100,000 vaccinations and the end of the order from the state of Hesse, the Corona vaccination center closed its doors on September 26th. “You saved human lives,” said Uwe Sauer, head of the Offenbach professional fire brigade.

Mayor Felix Schwenke (SPD) thanked everyone and reminded everyone that the vaccination center was set up within 18 days. However, it took three months before it could be put into operation because there was no vaccine. It was not until the summer that the capacity of up to 1,000 people who would like to be vaccinated per day was exhausted. “I haven’t heard any complaints about work from anyone in town,” says Schwenke. 25 service providers were in action in the vaccination center.

A vaccination station is to be built in the Bernardbau in the next few days. The Ekolog company won the tender from the city, which wants to maintain the vaccination offer without an appointment. The exact start date is not yet known. Then there will be mobile vaccination teams again. “We are a little sad that we did not manage to raise the vaccination rate,” says Bernhard Bornhofen, head of the health department.

According to figures from the state of Hesse, which expects a population of 130,000, although the city has around 140,000 inhabitants, the vaccination quota in Offenbach is around 64.2 percent for the first vaccinated and 57.1 percent for the second vaccinated. Bornhofen fears that after the autumn vacation the seven-day incidence will rise again rapidly. For four weeks it has been over 100, on Monday at 126.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

People are currently being hired again in the health department. Because the contact tracking of those who tested positive remains one of the greatest challenges in the health department. The problem: “The people we ask often don’t give that many contacts,” Bornhofen reports worriedly. He believes the many tests and the maintenance of the mask requirement at school have contained the spread of the virus. However, the lollipop tests in the daycare centers will be discontinued after the autumn holidays due to the insufficient number of participating children. However, Bornhofen continues to demand vigilance. He recently telephoned a woman who, despite being vaccinated with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, reported symptoms such as bad taste.

However, the majority of infections are carried by the unvaccinated. “I hope that we will manage to convince them too,” says Bornhofen.
