Dr Howard Tucker, the oldest practicing doctor in the world has revealed his secrets to making it to a century. According to him, eating steak and washing down martinis are the pleasures that help him remain a practicing neurologist even at the age of 100. When Dr Tucker was born in 1922, men were expected to live till 58, but he has survived not only Prohibition, The Great Depression, World War II, Polio, and even a global pandemic.

Dr Tucker was exalted as the ‘Oldest Practicing Doctor’ in 2021 by the Guinness Book of Records. He credited his longevity to “good genes” and “a bit of luck.” Interestingly, Dr Tucker’s strategy for a long and prosperous life is to enjoy it to the fullest and not restrict oneself too much. He suggested staying in shape by working out and staying active through activities such as swimming, jogging, hiking, and skiing. He maintained his strength and wellness even into his late 80s. “I try to get in at least three miles on my treadmill at a brisk pace most days of the week,” he said in an interview with CNBC.

However, Dr Tucker believes the real secret to longevity is avoiding ‘cognitive decline’ by keeping the mind active and stimulated. Many people who retire and become inactive in their day-to-day routines are at an increased risk of cognitive decline. Dr Tucker has been working for more than 75 years and was even named as the world’s oldest practicing doctor by the Guinness World Records. He advised that “the real secret to longevity is that there are no secrets. But we live daily and die once, so we must make the most of the time we have.”

Dr Tucker’s likes to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as spending time with his family, snowshoeing, and watching Cleveland sports. “When I’m not working, I like spending time with my four children and 10 grandchildren,” he added.

The scientist has an upcoming film called ‘What’s Next?’ that will analyze his fascinating life. Dr Tucker’s story shows that holding back on the finer things in life may not be the key to making it to 100-years-old. In conclusion, he advises staying active and engaged in activities both physically and mentally, eating a balanced diet, and finding joy in life.
