China Imposes Sanctions on US Defense Companies Over Taiwan Arms Sales

Jan 7, 2024 at 9:56 AM Update: 22 minutes ago

China has imposed sanctions on five US defense companies. The Chinese government is thus responding to a recent announcement of new American arms sales to Taiwan. The country sees this as a serious violation of its sovereignty and security interests.

The affected companies include BAE Systems, Alliant, AeroVironment, Viasat and Data Link Solutions. The punitive measures include seizing assets of those companies in China and banning transactions and cooperation with organizations and individuals in China.

Last month, the US State Department approved the sale of equipment to modernize Taiwan’s tactical information systems. This is estimated at 300 million dollars (more than 273 million euros). Since then, China has put its forces around the Taiwan Strait on high alert.

Although Taiwan has been self-governing since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, Beijing considers the island a renegade province. This is also not the first time that China has imposed sanctions on American companies for arms sales to Taiwan.

At the beginning of last year, China already placed Lockheed Martin and Raytheon on a list of unreliable entities. As a result, companies are no longer allowed to trade with China. They are also no longer allowed to make new investments in the country.
