World situation heats up, global nuclear weapons spending skyrockets

WASHINGTON – Global atomic weapons spending will increase sharply in 2021 according to the latest report of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on Tuesday (14/6/2022).

In just one year, nine nuclear-armed countries namely the United States (US), China, Russia, France, India, Israel, North Korea (North Korea), Pakistan and the UK spent a total of $82.4 billion to upgrade and maintain an estimated 13,000 nuclear weapons. they.

The number marked a 9% increase from a year earlier, according to ICAN estimates.

The report, which is ICAN’s third annual summary of global nuclear spending and titled “Squandered: 2021 Global Nuclear Weapons Spending,” highlights that in total, the world is spending a combined $156,842 every minute in 2021 on weapons of mass destruction.
