Brno and the Railway Administration today published the names of all twelve architectural offices that will compete for the design of a new look for Brno’s main railway station. In addition to the three previously announced offices, these are other renowned architectural offices, in four cases associated with Czech companies.
A complete list, including a sample of their work, is on the website Offices of the architect of the city of Brno. Those interested usually applied with a reference in the form of a railway station in one of the major European cities.
„The bar is set really high and offers hope that Brno will have the most modern railway station in Europe, ” said the mayor of Brno Markéta Vaňková. The competition was announced as a two-phase. The deadline for submitting requests to participate was 19 October; in about a month and a half, 47 of them met in the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno. During the examination, it was found that the two applications were identical, so the competition jury ultimately assessed 46 of them.
“In evaluating the submitted applications, the jury proceeded according to the competition conditions and evaluated the portfolios of reference works according to the degree of fulfillment of the criterion of the overall urban-architectural quality of the design, including the transport solution. It was selected in a total of three rounds and finally in the final vote, nine participants were confirmed, who will be able to submit a proposal in the 1st phase of the competition. described the First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík. The councilors approved the call for proposals today.
“The jury has preliminarily agreed that the evaluation meeting of the 1st phase of the competition will take place on March 4 and 5, 2021, according to the competition conditions. We should meet again in June and choose the winner, “ specified by the director of the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno Michal Sedláček.
Competitors must, among other things, design the station building, including the roofing and shape of the platforms, the shape of the railway body and bridge structures, the layout of the interior and the location of the main dispatch hall. Don’t forget about parking, bicycle storage or pedestrian connections.
The new station will stand by the river on the site of today’s lower station. It will be located on a bridge seven meters above the ground. The location of the station was decided in 2018 by representatives of the city and the region.
