The team of national coach Valentin Altenburg lost in the match for third place with 1:2 (1:0) against Australia. Match winner for the Hockeyroos was Stephanie Kershaw (49th/56th minute), who scored both goals.
Lena Micheel (14th) put the second in the European Championship into the lead before the initially superior Germans failed to extend their lead. Nike Lorenz (23./47.) was unsuccessful with her penalty corners and Pia Maertens (40.) failed free in front of the goal at the keeper.
In the semi-finals, the fourth in the world rankings had lost 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out against Argentina, who came second in the Olympics, less than 19 hours earlier. This exhausting match was clearly visible to the tirelessly fighting Germans in the final quarter.
