A woman from Hengelo has much of her hand missing after heavy illegal fireworks were thrown through her window and exploded. She also sustained injuries to her face and chest, police said.
The incident took place a month ago, but has only now been reported by the Overijssel police.
The 30-year-old woman heard a noise in a bedroom of her home at around 10.45pm on Nov. 22. She found a broken window there and an explosive device on the bed. When she was about to pick it up and throw it out, the heavy fireworks exploded.
Police suspect the woman was hit by a cobra, a popular type of illegal firecracker. The victim had to be operated on several times and spent weeks in hospital. Much of the hand with which she collected the fireworks proved unsalvageable.
Police are looking for a group of teenagers who were roaming the area that night. “They may have important information about this event,” a spokesman said.
