Woman ends up under train after being pushed onto the tracks in NY; suspect arrested – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – A woman was pushed onto the subway tracks Thursday morning, miraculously avoiding the impact of an oncoming train, and the man who allegedly pushed her was arrested at the scene, police said.

Police and firefighters say a man pushed the 40-something-year-old Hispanic woman onto the 4/5/6 line tracks in Union Square around 8:30 a.m. The woman fell between two train tracks, avoiding almost the impact of the train. Witnesses say the woman was waiting for the 5 train when the man, who appeared to be speaking to himself, approached her. The man apparently timed the push just as an incoming train was approaching and pushed the woman away without saying a word.

“It is very disturbing. We see him waiting, calculating that the train would approach the station and at the opportune moment he pushed the victim onto the tracks,” said New York Police Chief of Traffic, Captain Kathleen O ‘ Reilly, at a news conference Thursday morning, adding that the shocking incident was captured on surveillance video.

After the shove, the man saw the police approaching and threw himself on the floor waiting for the officers. The man, described by police as an emotionally disturbed individual in his 40s, is being held on pending charges, according to police.

NYPD say Union Square Station has a lot of foot traffic, about 22 million passengers a year, so the police patrol was in the area and quickly made the arrest.

The woman was taken to a hospital. Police say he sustained minor injuries, mostly cuts to the head, but is expected to survive.
