Winter track and field broadcasts found an audience

The closed door imposed by the health situation during the winter season deprived athletics enthusiasts from going to the competitions. To allow the public to follow the events for free, several organizers had the good idea to broadcast the show on Live Facebook. It was a success.

High level athletics is a spectacle. So, producing it in a stadium or an empty room, that may be a lesser evil, but it still lacks atmosphere. And it is not the organizers of the winter competitions (Meetings Elite and Pole Vault Elite Tour) who will say the opposite. The Covid-19 crisis has weakened events as much as it has pushed them to reinvent themselves through digitalization. Anxious to be able to satisfy lovers of the first Olympic sport, all the organizers whose competition was not broadcast on a national channel (Liévin meeting on France 4, Pole Elite Tour de Rouen on Eurosport and All Star Why on L’Equipe 21 and Eurosport), have decided to produce and broadcast their meeting, free of charge and with good quality, on different platforms, mainly Facebook (cameras + comments). And relayed by various partners, and in particular the Federation Française d’Athlétisme et Stadion, to ensure maximum visibility. Every weekend, from January 16 to February 14, it was a rolling affair: the commentators took place on their broadcast platform, while athlete fans settled comfortably behind their screens. If on the track and on the macadam (Monaco Run), the athletes could no longer count on many people to encourage them, thehe competitions broadcast live on Facebook brought together thousands of people. A good way to keep in touch with enthusiasts and to offer visibility to event partners during this in camera period. As you can see below, very good audience figures were recorded, while for most of the organizers it was a first experience.

  • StarPerche of Bordeaux (January 16): 97,000 views (live Live and cumulative replay)
  • Meeting de Miramas (January 22): 86,000 views (live Live and cumulative replay)
  • Mondeville meeting (January 30): 133,000 views (live Live and cumulative replay)
