Windows 7 reached the end of its life in mid-January. A petition has now been launched demanding that the operating system be released as free software.
Microsoft recently discontinued support for Windows 7 – at least for private users (Computerworld reported). As part of the “Extended Security Updates” service, corporate customers can obtain extended security updates until 2023. Because the operating system has reached the end of its life, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) is now asking Microsoft to release it as open source software. For this, the non-profit organization started the petition “Upcycle Windows 7”.-
In this, the FSF accuses the company of using the operating system for ten years to “poison education, violate privacy and endanger the safety of users”. The end of life of Windows 7 is therefore seen as a “perfect opportunity” to undo “past mistakes” and instead upcycled or recycled. So far, more than 6700 people have signed the petition. The FSF claims to have 7777 signatures.
The Redmond company is now much more open about open source than in the past. With the takeover of the software development platform GitHub in 2018, the group also opened up to the open source community (Computerworld reported). Nevertheless, it seems very unlikely that Microsoft will comply with the FSF’s request and publish the source code of Windows 7.–
