The latest Windows 11 update is filled to the brim with artificial intelligence, but it also brings other news, such as native support for several compression formats. After ZIP, he will learn to work with RAR as well.

Microsoft product director Panos Panay announced the addition of support for RAR, 7-ZIP, TAR and GZ formats. This happened a quarter of a century after Microsoft integrated support for the ZIP format.

Panay claims that it will now allow better performance of the compression functions. Existing applications like WinRAR will thus have a harder time, even though users could already have functions for working with RAR even within the file manager (Total Commander or Salamander). The WinRAR application can be used in a trial version, but in reality it will never end. Few people really paid for it.

“We’ve added native support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-Zip, RAR, gz, and many others using the project libarchive open source,” explains Panay in a post on blog.

Nobody really buys WinRAR anymore, Windows 11 has learned to work with the RAR format
