Windows 10 will receive one of the Xbox Series X technologies to make PC video games faster than ever

Microsoft confirmed the Xbox Series X for November 2020, the next-generation console that is soon to arrive and that is planted as one of the most powerful on the market does so in large part thanks to a series of technologies that the company has called Xbox Velocity Architecture.

An important part of these technologies is the API DirectStorageThis is the one that will allow next-gen games to take advantage of the console’s ultra-fast SSD to reduce loading time like never before. And now we know that this API will also come to Windows 10 and PC games.

As Microsoft explains, recent advances in both PCIe and SSD drives, especially those using NVMe technologies, have made gaming PCs able to handle much higher bandwidths than years ago. Anyone who has ever tried the difference between a hard drive and an SSD understands this in an instant.

Now the current problem is that modern games load more data than ever, and although they are also more intelligent in how they load that data, modern storage APIs are not optimized to handle all the requests that are made and at the same time load the resources of the games managing memory in the most efficient way. This results in that today’s best hardware is not being used to the full.

This is where Microsoft is especially optimizing its Xbox Series X, including an exceptionally fast SSD and its technologies like DirectStorage. What this API does is remove that bottleneck that currently limits what games can do even with very advanced hardware and a very fast SSD, so as not to waste the bandwidth of the latest drives.

DirectStorage is designed to truly unleash the full potential of modern gaming hardware and eliminate bottlenecks

Obviously, this cannot be used by all gamers, since it is designed for the best SSDs available on the market, that is, the NVMe for their high speeds, and those that come in the future.

DirectStorage will work hand in hand with DirectX 12 Ultimate To take gaming to a new level, take better advantage of new SSDs and other components such as the impressive GPUs in the NVIDIA Series 30. The idea is that in the future, games that take advantage of this new API will not be hampered by the old standards and can really take advantage of all that modern storage solutions have to offer.
