Wild bird ride at FC St. Pauli

HAMBURG – When FC St. Pauli and SV Darmstadt 98 meet, they are often memorable games. That on Saturday was also one: 0: 2 the lilies were behind, they equalized within 120 seconds – only to leave the place as a loser in the end. Man of the day was Pauli striker Guido Burgstaller, who scored two goals.

Darmstadt’s coach Markus Anfang made two changes in the starting line-up compared to the 1-0 win against VfL Osnabrück last weekend. Christian Clemens had to pass completely with thigh problems, Patrick Herrmann was at least sitting on the bench. Lukas Mai returned to the team, Tim Skarke replaced Clemens. Beginning therefore relied on three chains of three. St. Pauli coach Timo Schultz saw no reason to change anything after five wins in the last six games. Especially since Guido Burgstaller always scored in these games – that is a club record.

And the Austrian almost went for it: After 105 seconds, his shot landed right in the arms of Lilien keeper Marcel Schuhe. On the other side, Serdar Dursun approached a goal for the first time, but his attempt was too unplaced (7th). Before the game, both teams thought together of the victims of the racist attack on coaches in Hanau a year ago, in which nine people were killed. For many years, “No football for fascists” has been written on almost the entire width of a grandstand in the stadium at Millerntor, “No foot width for racists” was the motto over the loudspeakers before the game – that fit together perfectly.

St. Paulis exceptional striker

In the meantime, too much didn’t really fit together with the lilies. St. Pauli had a little more of the game – and bad luck that Darmstadt’s defender Immanuel Höhn cleared the corner in the last second before Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (21st). But five minutes later the doorbell rang: Sebastian Ohlsson prevailed far too easily against Fabian Holland, his pass could not control shoes – and Burgstaller dusted off from close range (26th). The 31-year-old has scored in every game since January 16 against Hannover 96 – seven times in total. The lilies simply do not have such an exceptional striker in their ranks at the moment. Nevertheless, a 1-1 draw was possible in the first round: Skarke sent Marvin Mehlem, but he shot over it from a good position (45th).

And the lilies started strong: Tobias Kempe set a free kick 18 meters from the goal against the crossbar (47th). What a start for the Darmstadters, who now seemed much more determined. Dursun almost made use of a fine counterattack against Mathias Honsak and Tim Skarke, but failed on keeper Dejan Stojanovic (51.). And Immanuel Höhn also had the 1-1 draw, his header just missed (53rd).

Five minutes later it should have been 2-0. After a long ball from Eric Smith, Omar Marmoush and Kyereh were free in front of shoes, but Victor Palsson thwarted a goal from the Egyptian with full commitment and Kyereh shot past (58th). That was a bit of slapstick that the FCSP allowed itself to do. And who was almost punished immediately – but Mathias Honsak shot past from close range (59th).

And so began wild bird minutes. Again Smith prepared brilliantly, the completely blank in the penalty area Marmoush gave shoes no chance – 2-0 (62.). But the game remained a wild ride – and Darmstadt was rewarded. Skarke hit with a hard, this time also precise shot to make it 2-1 (64th) – there was a lot of fire on both sides. And the lilies rewarded each other again: Skarke shone this time as a preparer, Dursun only had to hold out his foot – 2: 2 (66th). A draw that Schuben secured shortly afterwards when he parried brilliantly against Marmoush (68th). On the other hand, Stojanovic parried just as strongly against Honsak, who was running towards him (69th). Time to take a deep breath? Nothing!

Stoppage time was a wild hullabaloo

After the 2: 2 it got a bit quieter – first find yourself again, was the motto. And then the lilies fell behind again – 2: 3 by Burgstaller. Burgstaller, of course – he is the only one who hits this very dry at the moment, this time after an extremely fine ball acceptance with the left, that was almost brutal (82nd). But the lilies did not give up – Dursun headed the bar (86th). The second time that day that the crossbar saved the hosts, who ultimately secured the three points – also because the lilies did not take advantage of a wild riot in the Pauli penalty area in stoppage time – Immanuel Höhn hit the crossbar. For the third time that day – what bad luck.
