Why is Harry so quick to come up with memoirs? “Shocked that no one will take him seriously in a few years” | Royalty

RoyaltyPrince Harry (36) has only left the monarchy for a year before he comes with memoirs. According to experts, if he writes it now, he will regret it: “He should look at the book of his great-granduncle Edward VIII, who waited until he could have his say without bitterness.” Edward, like Harry, renounced the royal family after he married an American divorcee. “But with Harry there is another factor: he is afraid that in a few years no one will be listening to him.”

Harry announced two weeks ago that he will publish his first biography in 2022: “The memoir will be an honest and gripping portrait of Harry, which will outline his entire life. From his childhood – which he lived in front of the entire population, to his military career that took him twice to the front lines in Afghanistan and the happiness he currently draws from fatherhood and his relationship with Meghan . Readers will discover that behind all the rumors is an inspiring, courageous and uplifting human story,” said publisher Penguin Random House. The Duke of Sussex has signed a book deal of 20 million dollars (16.8 million euros) for this and is working with ghostwriter JR Moehringer.

The Duke of Sussex is not the first British royal to release his memoir. Harry’s great-granduncle Edward VIII also did this. Edward VIII was king of the UK, but abdicated in 1936 after he wanted to marry Lady Simpson, an American divorcee. The royal family would never accept her. Although Harry was never on the throne, royalty watcher Anna Pasternak thinks the similarities between the two are striking. Edward VIII was also a controversial figure. The couple visited Nazi Germany in 1937 against the advice of the British government and met Adolf Hitler. He also wrote a book that was published in 1951. The memoir was entitled ‘A King’s Story, The Memoirs of The Duke of Windsor’.

The royal family was not happy with Edward’s book. They were shocked that Edward VIII sold his secrets for money, because he also made 4 million euros with his book. Still, Pasternak thinks Harry’s book will be even more damaging. “Edward VIII waited fifteen years after the events to write a book about it. By this time everything was already better digested, leaving his memoirs without bitterness. Harry should take an example from his great-granduncle.”

Grab his chance quickly

But the chance that Harry will wait that long to get his book out is very slim. “Harry has a Prince Andrew complex,” jokes royalty watcher Dan Wootton. “Harry wants to use his privileged position as long as possible, as he is concerned that otherwise he will be labeled as ‘boring’ as people become more interested in his brother William’s children: George (8) Charlotte (6) and Louis (3). He also doesn’t want to become a castigated outsider like his uncle, Prince Andrew.” Andrew had to give up his royal duties after it became known that he was good friends with the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. He was suspended by the Queen as senior royal. Since then, he has largely remained in the background and no longer performs official duties as a member of the royal family. “So he has to quickly grab his chance to say what he wants to say.”

“Harry wants to make a difference, but what if nobody listens to him anymore,” Wootton said. It would also be why the Duke of Sussex chose to agree to the explosive Oprah interview. The prince also hopes to make a difference with his memoirs, although some think that he just does it to stay in the spotlight.
