On June 16, 2020, the investigators of the British recovery trial announced that a single corticosteroid, dexamethasone, had reduced the mortality of Covid-19 patients hospitalized with invasive respiratory assistance by a third. The researchers have just published their clinical data in pre-print: they confirm that the molecule, with powerful anti-inflammatory effects, markedly improves the outcome of serious patients.
Why it’s a real breakthrough. It is the first time that a treatment has really proven itself in the disease, after a few hasty announcements without follow-up. However not only the effect is important but the molecule is well known to doctors. Safe to use, inexpensive and easy to mass produce, dexamethasone represents a major advance in treatment. At the HUG, two intensive care patients have already received treatment.
