Why Chris Woerts thinks women’s footballers don’t deserve higher salaries

‘It’s laughable! Those women can barely get the ball from A to B!’

Chris Woerts thinks it is nonsense that the players in the Azerion Women’s Eredivisie are fighting for a better salary. The sports marketer is of the opinion that, given the quality of the Dutch fields, the football players have no right to protest under the heading ‘Paid football = getting paid’.

Woerts does not hold back on Friday evening when asked for his opinion on the sensitive issue in Today Inside. “It’s laughable! The KNVB has said that every BVO must have a women’s team. But there is not that much talent in the Netherlands, which causes fragmentation.”

“The good players play abroad, also for very little money,” Woerts adds. “But those ladies should keep their mouths shut, because they can barely move the ball from A to B!” Johan Derksen can only endorse Woerts’ words. “I completely agree with him.”

Woerts further explains why, in his opinion, the players in the Azerion Women’s Eredivisie should not earn more at all. “There are Olympic athletes who will go to the Olympic Games in Paris next summer. They train four or five times as hard for much less money, and they have to perform there in Paris.”

Women’s football is kept alive by the KNVB. They have started to equalize the premiums for men’s football with the premiums for women’s football. It is laughable,” said the surprised Woerts.

Low salary

Reporter Sanne van Dongen from ESPN last week gave an insight into the salaries of the women. “At Ajax, all girls earn 2,100 euros minimum wage based on 40 hours. That is the best-paid club in the Netherlands. At PSV and FC Twente there are also similar 40-hour contracts.”

“And also at FC Utrecht there are a few girls who earn minimum wage full-time. And then you have a very large group who earn minimum wage for 20 hours a week. That is half of 2100 euros, then you are talking about 1200 euros. “These are gross amounts,” says Van Dongen.
